6 Days in Leh – A Magical Winter Escape

Visiting Leh in winter is like stepping into a snow-laden dream. The mountains are draped in white, the skies an endless blue, and the air crisp with the silence of the Himalayas. This 6-day journey balances acclimatization, sightseeing, and road trips to some of Ladakh’s most iconic spots.

Day 0 – Acclimatization

Your adventure begins with rest. Leh sits at an altitude where oxygen levels are lower, so it’s important to take it slow. Settle into your stay, sip hot butter tea, and let your body adjust to the high altitude.

Day 1 – Exploring Leh City

Ease into your trip with Leh’s cultural highlights:

  • Leh Palace – A 17th-century palace overlooking the city.

  • Shanti Stupa – Best visited at sunset for panoramic views of Leh under golden light.

  • Magnetic Hill & Gurudwara Pathar Sahib – Fascinating stops along the Srinagar–Leh highway.

  • Nimmo Village – Where the Zanskar and Indus rivers meet, a sight that feels otherworldly in winter.

Day 2 – Day Trip to Alchi & Likir

Spend your day exploring two of Ladakh’s most historic monasteries:

  • Alchi Monastery – Known for its ancient murals and Indo-Tibetan art.

  • Likir Monastery – Home to a towering golden Buddha statue and sweeping valley views.
Return to Leh by evening to warm up with local Ladakhi food.

Day 3 – Khardung La & Nubra Valley

Head towards the legendary Khardung La Pass—one of the highest motorable passes in the world. From here, continue to the stunning Nubra Valley, where sand dunes meet snowy peaks. Spend the night in a cozy stay surrounded by mountain silence.

Day 4 – Return to Leh

Drive back to Leh at an unhurried pace, stopping at scenic points along the way. Use the evening to rest or wander through Leh’s bazaars, picking up handicrafts and souvenirs.

Day 5 – Road Trip to Pangong Lake

An early start takes you on a dramatic drive through frozen landscapes to the breathtaking Pangong Lake, where shades of blue contrast against white snow. Even in winter, the lake’s surreal beauty leaves you speechless. Return to Leh by nightfall.

Day 6 – Monasteries & Departure

Before your flight home, visit:

  • Thiksey Monastery – A 12-story complex resembling Tibet’s Potala Palace.

  • Shey Palace – Once the summer capital of Ladakh.
A soulful ending to a week of Himalayan wonder.

Best Time to Visit in Winter

Leh’s winters (December–February) are extreme yet magical, with temperatures dropping well below freezing. While days are clear and bright, be prepared for the cold and carry proper winter gear.
