Know Before You Go
- The local currency is the Philippine Peso (PHP). While cards are accepted in cities, cash is essential in El Nido and for local markets. It’s best to carry USD to exchange locally or use ATMs (inform your Indian bank first).
- The Philippines uses Type A (flat two-pin) and Type B (three-pin) plugs, similar to those in North America. The voltage is 220V. Indian travelers will need a universal travel adapter.
- When snorkeling or diving, do not touch or step on coral. Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the fragile marine ecosystem.
- Filipino food is not as spicy as Indian cuisine. While water is safe in sealed bottles, avoid tap water. Inform your tour guide of any dietary preferences (e.g., vegetarian).
- Purchase a local SIM card at the airport upon arrival for affordable data and calls. Smart and Globe are the main telecom providers.
- Pack light, breathable cotton clothes, strong sunscreen, a hat, mosquito repellent, swimwear, and sturdy sandals. A waterproof bag for island hopping is highly recommended.
- Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for good service. A tip of 50-100 PHP in restaurants and for guides/drivers is a common practice.
- Bargaining is acceptable in local markets but not in shopping malls or fixed-price stores. Always be polite when negotiating.
- English is widely spoken and understood. Filipinos are famously hospitable. A smile and polite manners go a long way. Learn a few basic phrases like “Salamat” (Thank you).
